Heikki photographing at a rhythmic gymnastics competition

Heikki is a sports photographer from Finland. He came to rhythmic gymnastics sideways. He was shooting portraits when a client asked him to try a competition, and the pictures worked before he understood why.

So he learned the sport. He studied the Code of Points until he could read a routine the way a judge reads it: the split at the top of a leap, the half second where the shape is right and the half second after it is gone. That half second is the photo. It is also where the reel cuts, always at full speed. Slow motion stretches an element out just far enough to show where it was weak.

He works carpet-side, mostly in Estonia. He also mixes competition music, for gymnasts who want a routine that sounds like it was built for them.

A routine lasts ninety seconds. Getting there takes years. riotcolorphoto is there at both ends.

Before the season, I make the music. I’m a musician, a music teacher and an audio engineer, so a mix is cut on the phrase, timed to the Code and shaped around how she moves, not just shortened to fit. The connection between music and movement is scored, and it starts in the edit.

On competition day, I keep what she made of it. I read every routine through the Code of Points. The frame I keep is the one where the shape is fixed, the line is long and the apparatus is where it should be. Among those, I choose the one where she looks like herself on her best day.

Files arrive when I said they would. Messages are answered by me. Families come back season after season, and that is the only number I count.
